| As part of ILCA’s “30 Years of Olympic ILCA Sailing” series, we speak with sailors who competed in the class’s Olympic debut and reflect on what that experience means three decades on.
For Irish sailor Mark Lyttle, Atlanta 1996 was the realisation of a dream that began almost two decades earlier, when he got his first Laser in 1977, growing up sailing in Dún Laoghaire.
Representing Ireland in Savannah, Lyttle competed in a fleet that included some of the greatest names in Olympic sailing, in conditions he still remembers fondly as some of the best he ever raced in, not to mention winning Race 3 of the Olympic Regatta.
Lyttle’s connection to the class never faded after Atlanta. He has remained an active competitor for decades, winning the ILCA 7 Grand Masters World Championship title in 2018 in his home waters of Dún Laoghaire, and again in 2026 in Athens, Greece.
Beyond his own racing career, Lyttle has taken on a leading role in shaping the future of the class itself. He currently serves as President of the ILCA Class Association, having taken on the role at the end of 2025, succeeding Tracy Usher.
